Question:

How to filter soil from weed fragments and pebbles?

Our yard is very rocky due to the fact that our whole town is a filled-in swamp.

So, as I weed incessantly in a small, shady area the size of a master bedroom, I have been sifting small mounds of soil, etc, through a woven basket and also now a cooking strainer (not a colander for pasta, a real metal strainer).

How do I sort the rest out?

Thinking of using a big basin, adding water, and letting roots float.

Anything easier?

BTW we just spent more than $10,000 on fixing a major problem, and there was supposed to be enough topsoil to fill this but there isn't.

My time means less of his money, you see, so no, we won't be buying anymore topsoil this year.

  1. Make yourself a sieve/strainer using mesh wire stapled to a wooden frame. You can also buy a premade garden sieve from garden supply stores but making them is much cheaper :)

A small sized strainer ( 2' x 3') can be placed over a wheelbarrow or galvanized tub. For the amount of dirt you are having to sift, you might want to make a large one such as the one I have for my garden. Mine is 3 feet wide by 6 feet high and is supported upright by two legs which creates something of a tripod. The advantage of this type of garden strainer is that it can be placed directly on the ground.

good luck! I live on top of an old river channel so I know what you're going through :)
