Question:

How to find a leak behind the wall

I just moved into a basement studio last month and notice that one corner of the room was wet. Couldn't figure out how it got wet. Today, during a heavy rain storm, the same spot was wet. Already called maintenance and their are coming tomorrow to take a look. No leaks that I notice but have to assume it's coming from behind the walls. How do one find the leak? Even though someone is coming to take a look, I don't want to wait until it rains again.

  1. This is best left to the professionals, But you're right we don't want more water.First thing is if this is an out side wall ( cement or cinder block wall ) most likely it will becoming from the out side which the maintenance worker will have to do some digging around to find the problem,  Then after the problem is resolved make sure that the surrounding area is treated for possible mold issues from arising in the future. Water is a funny thing and can find the darnedest routes to follow, this means that not necessarily be coming from out side, and be coming from the floor above In the mean time as we don't know how long it will take to fix, use some peroxide or some bleach to spray around the area that was wet. this will help to kill any fungus or mold that could cause problems down the road. I hop this helps you for the time being

  2. The only real way to find the leak is to tear into the wall, so l would let them do that just incase they try to hold you libed for tearing into the wall yourself and expect you to pay to fix it.
