Question:

How to find a long term rental in Los Cabos?

I've been looking for a few months already, and OMG what a nightmare! If I hadn't already accepted a position in Cabo San Lucas, I would just start looking elsewhere to move; it's been THAT bad.

I tried the gringogazette but the cc processing doesn't seem to work with international cc's- only American and Canadian.

I have been contacting rental agents consistently- most would not reply again after learning I was not interested in a short term vacation rental. Some responded with a curt, "contact me after May" or, "you contacted me before" without ever bothering to tell me if they had anything available. Others quoted differences of up to $1,000 USD for the same exact unit and changed the "internet/ac included" to "extra."

It has been so bad, that I have decided to stay at a resort rather than rent through an agent for my first month in Cabo. I decided I would rather pay more for friendlier service. I'm planning to keep looking, but I'm at my wits end and all but begging for any helpful tips! Are there local publications in Cabo that have a number of rental listings? Any suggestions for other places to look? Much appreciated!

  1. Try cabomarket.com, listings are mostly in Spanish, but no so difficult to understand, and Mexican prices.

Make sure is in Cabo San Lucas, since they have a mix of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and they are at least 30 minutes driving apart.

    This is a good option:

    IN 3773

Céntrico DPTO amuebl en Cabo S Lucas 1 rec 1 ba 6,500 $ renta mensual. CableTV  A/Cond Televisor Refrig c/freezer salacomed, baño c/ agua caliente cel: 044-624-1009661

    That means:

1 bedroom (1 rec) 1 bath (1 ba), furnished (amueblado) condo (DPTO) close to down town (centrico). $600 USD a month. Cable TV, A/C, TV, fridge, living room and dinning room, hot water.

To call a cell phone from outside Mexico you have to dial

    011 52 1 624 1009661

    I hope this may help.

    Good luck.

  2. I understand completely. I would say some of the rental agents in Los Cabos are amongst the rudest folks in the travel industry, right up there with the front desk at George IV in paris. There are a few  private owners near the marina that I've found friendly & helpful but for the most part even owners don't want to be bothered with too much effort.

To be fair, I they do have to deal with a high number of customers regularly, and the amount of weeding they have to do to avoid wasting time I'm sure is stressful.

Your best bet is to get to Cabo, make friends and keep your eyes open for those "for rent" signs.  If you speak spanish, there are a few online classifieds that have affordable long terms listed; loscabostoday.com is one.

Really wish you good luck. Rental agents aside, Los Cabos is a friendly place ;)

  3. Cabo is expensive my dear!    I don't know what you are expecting.  I pay $1000 a month plus bills and my place is tiny.    No one I know pay less than $850 a month.

However, I think you did the right thing, by staying a resort for a month while you look around here.  That is really the best way to find a place to live in the area.  Most people I know that come down, often find a suitable place within 3 months.  Also, slow season comes after spring break, so you may have better luck.  I'm surprised your new boss hasn't arranged any accommodations. Maybe you should ask them to help you?  After all, they must have gotten your FM3 going, why not a place to live?

There are no rental listings type publications here.   Sorry.  Its mostly word of mouth and sight/seen.  No one will rent you anything without checking you out in person first.  Do you blame them?

Have you tried Craigs List.  I've noticed several posting on there for reasonable long term rentals.

    Good luck.

p.s. Sorry to offend you, but just being honest.  There are so many people who come to Mexico with an expectation that things will run exactly like where they come from (USA/CANADA/EUROPE/AUSTR) and they are RUDELY introduced to a whole new way of life......and quickly!  It is really hard to live and work down here.  Especially if you came from another country.  You must assimulate immediately or go nuts.  I wish you all the best in your hunt for a home.
