How to find average speed?

A car travels up a hill at a constant speed of 40km/h and returns down the hill at a constant speed of 60 km/h. Calculate the average speed.

I don't understand this question because in order to find average velocity, you need the total distance covered over the total time, but I am only given two velocities. The only thing I can think of that is relevant to this problem is that you will make it in 2/3 of the time downhill than it took to get uphill but you will still be solving for two variables.

  1. By definition, average of 2 numbers a & b is given as:

    (a+b)/2

  2. im guessing... 50 km/h??

  3. Speed is scalar. Scalars are quantities with only magnitude. The direction does not matter. If you are on the highway whether traveling 100 km/h south or 100 km/h north, your speed is still 100 km/h. Other examples of scalar quantities are shoe size, mass, area, energy.

    (average speed) = (total distance)÷(total time)

  4. Vav = (U + V)/2

    This is one of the basic equations for finding the average velocity

    U is initial velocity

    V is final velocity

    and you have been given both ^^ happy travels

    P.S.

    "T1 = d/60

    T2 = d/40

    Total distance = 2d

    Total time = T1 + T2 = d/40 + d /60

    average speed = 2d / (d/40 + d /60)

    The d will cancel out.

    Note: And the answer turns out to be 48. Pls nominate me for the best answer. The rest of the guys aint really helping i think."

    if you look at this and can understand what he is saying u end up with (60+40)/2 (which is 50 not 48) but u could have just used the simple Vav = (U + V)/2 to get exactly the same result without fuss

  5. speed = distance over time

  6. add the two numbers together and divide by 2

  7. 50km/h

  8. i think your velocity is also the acceleration if that helps

  9. T1 = d/60

    T2 = d/40

    Total distance = 2d

    Total time = T1 + T2 = d/40 + d /60

    average speed = 2d / (d/40 + d /60)

    The d will cancel out.

    Note: And the answer turns out to be 48. Pls nominate me for the best answer. The rest of the guys aint really helping i think.

    To the guy below....

    Wow... Thats the first time I've seen the formula for average speed calculated like this.... Very basic indeed.... My answer turns out to be 48, not 50. Look my friend, look....

    Question for him(below), If i travel 100km/h for 10 hours and 10km/h for 1 min, I guess my average speed is 110/2 = 55km/h den....
