  1. You can't.  For a period of time, they are private, available only to immediate family.  After that time, they are "public" info but not free and in many states you still need to show that you are a direct descendant of the person you are requesting a certificate for.

  2. If you do find certificates for free, please let me know...

However if you just want to check the date of a death in Australia, online records go up to different years in different states... e.g. NSW Death records go to 1977.

    Go to http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/...

and then to search now... , then births and deaths, type in the name, etc. as you want, then the results that come up will give you the number of the certificate/year of death or registration, last name, given name, father's name, mother's name, and district...note district does not necessarily mean town.

Often that will be the only information you will need.

It is cheaper to get a transcription of a certificate rather than the full certificate and there are a number of people who do transcriptions at a reduced price. To find them, search for " BDM (birth, marriage, death)" transcriptions.

There is also a certificate exchange site, but you would have to be really lucky to get the one you want from there. The site is the second one listed below.

To search for BDM in other states, just follow the links from the NSW site, or type in the state you're interested in + BDM records.

    I hope this helps.
