How to find density of solid without a measuring cylinder?

  1. ask yourself how you determine density.  density is the mass divided by volume.  So if you can weihg the solid and measure the dimensions to determine the volume, you can easily calculate the density.  


  2. It is simple if you have a top pan balance.

    First weigh the object  Say, W gms.

    Now place a container into which the object can enter on the pan with enough water in it to submerge the object. Weigh this say W1 gms.

    Tie a string around the object and slowly lower it into the water till it is completely submerged but not touching the sides of the container and take the weight. Say, W2 gms.

    The difference between W2 and W1 is numerically equal to the volume of the object in cc.

    Density = W/(W2-W1) gms/cc
