I am working with my family on history and geneaology. I now know my maternal Grandmother had a sister. She was married and had 2 daughters. I never knew about this-there must have been something very wrong. It would I am sure be a story I would be interested in but more importantly I wish to know about their parents and grandparents. I have no one to ask and can't figure out how to find them.

My Grandmother- Dorothea Marie Jacobsen; her mother- Florence Ella Tibbetts; her sister-Elizabeth-one of who's daughters' name may be Barbara. I believe them to be in Calif (at some point in Downey maybe). but from Iowa, North Dakota, and Nebraska.

I also wish to find my Dad's paternal cousins. He had 2 paternal Uncles one of which had married a Ruby Goodman. I remember visiting her as a very small child in Colorado. Rumor in the family has it that she was THE historian. I wish to connect with ANY of my Fleming cousins. I just don't know how to go about it. I understand the security problem.

  1. I agree that your first stop needs to be the social security death index... but I tried to run your grandmother, her mother.. and not sure if you used married or maiden names in your question.  Verified dates and places of death are priority.. to look for funeral records or obituaries.  The latter is where I'd be looking for survivor names.  Ancestry.com has a fair 'living person' finder, which could give some more recent addresses, but finding the names is step one.

    Re Ruby, is this her?

    Ruby A. Fleming   3 Dec 1908   15 May 1995   Brighton, Adams, Colorado

Only Ruby Fleming I found in Colorado.  You did not include the name(s) of the uncles, or could also run searches for their dates.

Depending on when grandma was born, she may be in the 1930 census, with her parents/ sister. Hopefully that clarifies the sister and approx age.  Flip back to the obit, and that should again, give you date/place of death.  With dates and places, you can go for the newspaper in the area, or the library for news archives. SOME might be online, no guarantee.

Many of the regulars here will do quick lookups for the census, if they have a name/ location. Ancestry.com is the one place with all census records. You can do a free trial, or use it long enough to get your info.. it also is often free at your local library.

If you can clarify some of the names, you can repost them.
