How to find information?

I am looking for information on my dad like where he lived when he passed away and his obituary. i did a search on the ssdi and a obituary search and found him on the ssdi but there was no info other than dates how can i find what state he lived in i have all the info i need but what state

  1. since he is deceased, you might post the name and date.. there are some other resources that he may show up in (state death index, so forth)

    The other option is sending for his social security file. If your name on your birth cert shows him as father, you should have no problem.  It does cost.

    Also, try www.zabasearch.com.  It does have some out of date info, he could show up there.


  2. The SSDI should show you the last known state he resided in and where the last benefits were paid.  This is not always the state of death although it usually is.  

    Check with some of the newspapers in that area for a date around the time of his death and see if they have the obituary.  Some are online.  If not enough information is in it you might try some of the town clerk's office or town or county health department or state health department to see if they have a copy of the death certificate.  Most will work with you.

    Census information isn't available until you get back to 1930 so that probably won't help you.  Do you have any relatives who might know?  If so, check with them. Once you get going on this thing it kind of gets carried away and it's interesting.
