Question:

How to find my LAN ip and WAN ip?

I'm using a wireless broadband router (without going through a modem) at home. How can I find my LAN ip as well as WAN ip?

I've tried sites like "whatsmyip.com" and "ipchicken.com" but both gave different results.

I have also tried command prompt > ipconfig/all. But the result is 192.168.1.100, different from the ones i got from the 2 sites above.

Please help >.<" You're assistance is very much appreciated!

  1. go to run and type cmd then when it loads up type ipconfig it displays ur ip

  2. The IP addresses on your LAN will be internal, non-routable IP addresses (by the Ethernet standard) that start with 192.168.something.something. The ipconfig /all command will show which of these internal (meaning LAN or Local Area Network) addresses the computer has.

Since it sounds like you are using dynamic IP addressing for your computers on your LAN, that IP address may change at the discretion of the router, but it will always be in a certain range. That is, it might be any address from 192.168.1.100 too 192.168.1.149, for an example.

You can find this range for certain by logging into the router and checking the DHCP range settings. When your desktop/laptop/Xbox first starts up, it will request an IP address. The DHCP server on the router will give it one. However, there is no guarantee that it will be the exact one it had the last time. It will just be somewhere in the range of addresses the router is set up to administer.

The WAN IP address is the one you see when you browse to http://whatsmyip.org/ (note .org not .com) is the externally routable IP address that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has assigned to your router. It will start with something other than 192.168 or 10. For example 63.112.7.213

If you have dynamic IP service rather than static IP service (which is typically the case for residential broadband) your router gets it's IP address by talking to your ISP's DHCP server (just like the computers on your LAN talk to your router's DHCP server to get an IP address). Dynaminc IP addresses are not permanently assigned and part of the response for the request for an IP address is a date and time for which that IP address is valid (called the "lease time).

When the lease expires (or shortly before that so that Internet service is not interrupted) your computer will ask your router's DHCP server (or your broadband router will ask your ISP's DHCP server) for a new IP address. There is no guarantee that IP address that your router (or the ISP) assigns to you the next time will be the same as the last one. In fact, many ISPs go out of their way to insure that you don't regularly get the same IP address. This makes it harder for you to operate servers (such as hosting a game server) as the address will change periodically. I did hear of one cable company that went to the extreme of setting the lease time to only few hours in length for this very reason. If you are going to use multiple sites like whatsmyip, make sure you do it within a short amount of time of each other in order to minimize the chance the lease has expired.

  3. login your router and check the connection status

do you think that i am just kidding!?

  4. anything that you get when you do an ipconfig command on any of your machines on your network that you are using are local addresses in your case 192.168.x.x so those are the LAN ip addresses your WAN ip you will find out by remoting into the router by using a web browser and entering the ip address of the router and then the username and password of your router and go to connection status or connection settings and that will give you your WAN ip address.

Your ISP ( internet service provider ) will only provide you with 1 WAN I.P unless you paid for more or have the ability to have numerous static ip addresses or something to that extent ?

Which most people won't have as you generally just get one as you only need one.

  5. Hi..

    --click ok

--Now type ipconfig.., u wil get both lan and wan ip address

    Good luck..

    cheers..

  6. Go to the COMMAND PROMPT under Assessories.

Type IPCONFIG , & press ENTER.

    The info should appear.

The type EXIT, to close the screen.

192.168.0.100 is probably your current LAN.

  7. click the small monitor located at the bottom right part of your screen. right click and chose 'network and sharing center', view computer and devices, chose your comp or router, then properties, network device. your ip is there.
