  1. Assuming you are not adopted and don't know who your biological parents were, the first thing to do is to ask your parents as much as you can about their respective parents (father AND mother, of course). Write down their names, the places they were born in, and the approximate dates of birth (if you can't get the exact dates).

Then, go to a website (www.Familysearch.com is a very good starting point) and follow the very simple steps to perform the basic searches. Compare the results with the names you've got written down. And so on..

Sooner or later, you will probably have to dig into archives, though - or hire somebody to do it for you.

IMPORTANT: ask your living relatives as many questions as you possibly can about your family (stories and such), and write down what they tell you (no matter how "silly" it may sound). That's the kind of stuff you won't find in any archives - and it's priceless.

You are about to embark on a fascinating journey that will likely take many years of your life - and it will be worth every day of it!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I have in my years of genealogy research.

Oh, and another thing: be prepared for MANY surprises...!

In genealogy, hardly anything is as it looks at first sight - or as your relatives have told you... ;)

  2. ahh...theres this website called ancestry.com i think. im always receiving stuff from there but no way could they find out my past. im mexican and mexicans are just children of the Spanish and the Native Americans of mexico. and then my last name is supposedly derived from Japan. but maybe you'll have some luck and find out you are the heir of a knight or seaferer. i know i spelled that wrong. hope i helped. :)

  3. You could have a look at www.familysearch.org  it's completely free and very easy to use. You may decide from there to buy membership with one of the other sites.

    Hope this helps.
