Question:

How to find out if a publisher is legit?

I am an author of several childrens children's novels. I have only had my short stories and poetry published and am having a difficult time getting an agent or publisher because as most people know it's almost impossible these days. I found a publisher where I live in NM, and when I say very small it's an understatement. The owner is the only person in the entire company. Is it possible to have such a small publishing company and still get books distributed properly? Is it possible that it is a scam?

  1. It's a scam.

Also, it isn't nearly impossible to get an agent these days at all. Just make sure you research properly.

Here is a very helpful agent blog:

    pubrants.blogspot.com

I learned loads about the business.

  2. Yes it is possible it is a scam.  But it is also very possible for a very small company to have wide distribution.

02.13.61 publishing is independently owned and operated and can be found in Barnes and Noble all over the US and Europe.

If you are paying them, it is a scam.  If you are getting paid (or at least a chunk of the sales) then it is not.

Be careful, like scam record labels, some publishers will put you into debt.  They'll pay for the printing and if you don't sell enough copies to make back their money then you owe them.  They'll force you to buy up your copies.

  3. It could be legit.  Could you ask for references and some names of recent clients?

See a lawyer if you're not sure of anything and don't sign anything until you review it with a legal representative.

    Good luck to you!!!!!
