got a 68' impala sedan with the original 327 engine in it. It has 128,000 original miles on it, I was wondering how to find out if the core is rebuildable.

  1. Motor has to go to a motor shop be hot tanked, dye penetrate with ultra violet lite is only one of 5 ways of checking for cracks, shop will mic everything up and tell you whether it needs the ridges cut, bored .30 over or .60 over as an everyday driver you don't want a sleaved motor...my guess you pull motor disassemble it and deliver it to a machine shop...$300 to $500...rings bearings and gaskets $600...rod bolts, lifters, push rods, timing chain and gears, freeze plugs, oil pump and sump, another $600

A GM target motor is $1200 to $1800 right from the dealer

  2. atarpark is absolutely correct.

  3. if the block isn't cracked it is.

  4. You are going to have to take it to a specialty shop for that.  They have special dyes and know exactly where cracks are likely to form on the block.  If it passes this inspection (no cracks) and the cylinder walls don't have excessive wear then it is rebuildable. From the stroke of the piston the cylinder walls tend to get worn into ovular shapes due to how the piston is forced while it is rotating on the crank.  Even if there is some wear to the point where the cylinder walls are becoming ovular, you can still bore it and/or sleave the walls if the block has enough material between the cylinders to do so.
