How to find out who is texting me ! help !?

one of my friends is texting me and i dont have a clue who ! i dont want to ask cos i dont want to seem rude like i dnt know who it is or dont no there number. their number shows but its not in my phonebook, help !

Tell them you had to get a new phone and lost all your contacts so you don't know anyone's number anymore.
