How to find someone to refinish/replate brass lamps?

Hello!

I need to find someone local to the area around Columbus, Ohio to refinish a pair of solid brass lamps. I have found one in Eastlake, K&J Metal Refinishers, but I always like to explore options before choosing. Do you have recommendations, or could you find someone else in my area that offers this service?

Thank you

  1. If they are solid brass, you should be able to use brass polish along with a special application of elbow grease to restore them.

  2. if they're just tarnished id recomend picking up a product called brasso at your local hardware store just polish it in and wipe off worked real good on my brass guitar slide

  3. On the right track.

Look for other metal finishing sites or big lighting shops that restore / repair lamps for estimates.

It is possible to have them power buffed or even polished yourself , but if you want them coated , it is best to have it done in the same shop.

You will be able to choose the type of finish you want from a

bright polish to "brushed" or  an "antique" finish.

Used to do  a lot of  buffing & repairs on all sorts of brass items & hands down, the new finishes are better & more durable than the best lacquers that were available then.

If K&L is local , ask if they do restorations for antique shops & try to see their work.

Would  also bring any finials or other brass hardware original to the lamps.

Just a guess, but these days, would think that a good restoration cost of  $125 or so  for both would be fair since new solid brass lamps (unless tiny) would be a few hundred each.

    Best regards.

  4. The yellow pages helps a lot.  If you can only find one place in your area, go there for a tour and see if it gives you a warm,. fuzzy feeling.  If not, look nationally and ship the items to them.  Who cares if it's a local company as long as the products don't get damaged during shipping?

  5. if they are solid use a well known polish, then buff to a shine, use cotton gloves otherwise your finger prints will mark the brass, to keep the shine, paint with a clear lacquer or  use clear nail polish, let it air dry in a warm spot, if the weather is cold the lacquer will go white
