  1. Of course a radar gun will give you a correct speed reading for a train.  Why would it not detect a train?  Stealth technology?

  2. yep i think a radar gun would do it ... well a train is a lot bigger than a car or semi .. so yeah i think so .. lol

  3. A radar gun will do the job.  I know this because of an accident at a rail crossing near my house that claimed the lives of two good friends of mine.  One of the many accusations leveled at the engineer was excessive speed (the speed limit in that area was 45 MPH).  As a result, a representative of the DOT was down at our crossing clocking the speed of passing trains, and a passing Milwaukee Road train (this was in 1984) was clocked at 71 MPH - so it works.

  4. Yes, and if you are on the train you can use a GPS.

  5. The traditional way of calculating the speed of a train is to time the interval between mileposts with a stopwatch. Each milepost is 1/4 mile apart, so if you time the interval between one and the next and multiply by 4, that gives you the time taken to travel a mile.

From that you can calculate the speed in miles per hour.

Example: interval between 2 mileposts is 7.5 seconds. Therefore train covers 1 mile in 30 seconds. This is 2 miles a minute or 120mph.

  6. Absolutely.  Doppler radar works every time and any company officer has access to one.
