How to find the total area of a pitched roof?

Question

Applying shingles to a roof, need to know the entire area of the roof, being that there is a pitch to it. What's the formula?

Measure from gutter to peak of the roof along the shingles and the length of gutter. This gives you a triangle.

formula is 1/2 base x height

where base = gutter length and

height = distance along shingles from gutter to peak

If you have gable ends it is a rectangle just base x height

u say triangle sounds like a hip roof to me. there are two types of roofs gable and hip. to figure out area of a hip roof measure length at bottom then from the point of the triangle at the of the roof measure down. so it is lenght times width , divide by 2 and thats ur magic number. ok now after dividing by 2 take that number and times by 4 that will give you total sq. ft. of roof. ur probably thinking that that can't be rite trust me, yes there is extra sq.ft. in the calculation you will need the extra material for starters and caps and waiste. 1 bundle of shingles covers exactly 33 1/3 sq.ft. so it takes 3 bundles to make one sq. a sq. is 10'x10'  so if you have a rook that is 1600 sq. ft.so it will take 48 bundles to cover that area.                                                                                                                                      good luck have a great time reroofing

(FYI ) ONE BUNDLE OF SHINGLES WILL NOT COVER 3 SHEETS OF PLYWOOD  THERE IS 32 SQ.FT. IN A 4'X8' SHEET LIKE I MENTIONED ABOVE ONE BUNDLE OF SHINGLES =33 1/3 SQ.FT.

A easy way to figure shingles. 1 bundle of shingles  will cover 3 sheets of plywood. i sheet of plywood= 4' x 8'
