Question:

How to find this and where?

Ok my father was a soldier during Vietnam, but he passed away a few years ago and I was wondering is there was any kind of sight I could go onto to find his picture when he graduated basic training back then.

I know he was in the Army if that will make a difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Ask the recruiting office in the city area your dad probably joined in:

Where did most of the people in 19__ go for basis training. Also ask some older people in that community. You'll probably narrow it down to

two or 3 posts (towns). Contact the Public Relations Office and ask who did the photos for graduating classes back then and did his office keep any file copies?

Next, if no help, tele local photographers who were in business back then..if you're lucky, they kept files an are still alive and in business.

The Army Records your dad probably kept will likely tell you of his

DATE OF ENTRY. THE DD-214 WILL TELL YOU PRACTICALLY ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW and you can systematically contact each unit of assignment -- asking about possible pictures. Try his AIT (2d phase

of Tng) which trained him to become a ....whatever he was -- tanker, infatryman, artillery, cook, supply clerk, etc.

Also, check "grandmothers old pictures". Often we sent some pix home and mothers are the ones who always kept things from their "babies".         Good Luck and God Bless (hope someone's answer helps you)

Was he a member of any VFW locals? DAV locals? If so, try them

Those "friends" probably shared "war stories" and may know of some

    of dad's friends and units.

  2. try your local VA office. (Veterans Affairs) If anybody would know how to get something like that, it would be them

  3. If you have the information: name, unit, what Post he graduated from Basic Training and year, You can put an ad in the newspaper or military organizations, publications, etc...
