  1. There are many sites that will help you for free, but they are limited. If you are near and LDS church they often have Family History Centers that will help you without trying to convert you to their church. You can use their computers and have access to sites you'd normally have to pay for, they also have experienced people you can ask questions of.

www.cyndislist.com has a hugh data base of websites, many of them free.

Rootsweb is one of the oldest, best free sites, it has surname searches and great message boards. The message boards are for surnames, places, nationalities. There are pedigrees listed as well.

Familysearch.org also has a lot of information. They also have some census work free online.

www.censusfinder.com can direct you to free information as well.

All that said, there is a lot of information out there that people have posted which isn't verified and therefore can be wrong. You can't belive it just because it's on a website. Look for sources listed with the data given.

Just googling Free Genealogy Sites gives you lots of options.

  2. By re-living it.

  3. The best way to know your family history is to check with the oldest in the family, from there you will get the neccessary clue to gather more fact from local libraries. The data from library would give you the clue places of relevance to visit for more fact

  4. As the one person mentioned, talk to the oldest in the family. I liked ancesty.com They were very helpful. Although they could not fill in everything. A lot of documents were destroyed in a fire in Washington. They are gone.
