Here's how we do it.  Get a good deep sea rod.  Check with the bait shop or local fishermen what the fish are biting on.  Cast out!  Wait for a bite.  Here is the debate though.  Do you put your bait in a bucket, tie it on to you and walk out into the surf.  Does this attract sharks that could mistake you for bait !!!!  We just stay on the beach.  The surf takes your line out anyway.  Fun, fun, fun.  Our latest catch was a bunch of trout (and a sting ray)

Make sure you have a state or local permit for surf fishing and that you use a beach that accepts the permit.

You'll need a lot of line and a long rod, plus some relatively heavy sinkers. That will help you cast out to the part of the ocean where there might be some fish. Check at local bait shops to find out what kinds of fish are biting and get help selecting the best bait.

If you haven't done this before, it's a good idea to take a more experienced fisherman with you. Two reasons for this: He or she can give you pointers on what to do -- and you'll appreciate the company. The fish won't exactly be jumping out of the ocean and into your bucket.

sit on a dock if the beach has one--or rent a boat and ask a local bait store if they have any recommendations for good ocean bait--don't hit the surfers w/ your line!

you will need a long surf rod and depending on the current where your fishing would decide the weight you use.....i have used a large piece of cut off pcv pipe to hold the rod in the sand ..cast it as far and hard as you can and wait....as for bait as your local bait shop what is the best the could help  you with your weights and hooks...good luck if you find a good surf fishing spot its fun...

Purchase a fishing pole and tackle for sea fishing.  It does differ from fresh water.  Cast your line after baiting the hook, squid, fish heads (depends on what your going after) and then wait for a bite.  Not much different than fishing on a riverside.
