Question:

How to fix a creaking door?

My husband did some "work" on our guest bedroom. He took out all of the moldings and replaced them, and put a new door on. But I don't know if it's off center or something, but when you open it and close it, the back of the door creaks against the door jam. I know for sure it's not the hinges. It's definitely the wood creaking. We are having to turn this into the new baby's room, so what's an easy way, inexpensive, that we can get rid of the creaking?

  1. sounds like the jam is moving with the door. replace a small hinge s***w from each hinge with a longer one that will penetrate the shoulder stud behind it. that should do the trick!

  2. Very easy.Just use a candle and rub all the wood parts.

  3. Plane down the edge that rubs or put another nail in the frame to pull it toward the stud a little more.

  4. Congrats for your addition...family as well as home.

Longer screws might work, might not, can't hurt.

If that don't fix the problem, have your hubby listen for the squeeking as you open and close the door. If the door casing is creaking, 2" wood screws through the casing into the frame at top, middle and bottom.
