How to fix a frozen air conditioner?

Hi there people , my air conditioner has frozen over, I turned it off for a few hours , and when I turn it back on .. it is blowing out some water. Any way to fix this ? Thanks everyone, all answers appreciated. :]

Verdugo: You have to call a HVAC tech, because it may be low on Refrigerant. If you have a license to buy it then I'll teach you how. In the mean time check your filter make sure is not dirty, then cut the power to the unit, and check to see if the coil is dirty. Any restriction of air can cause your ac unit to freeze up or low on refrigerant.

i took a sharp thing and hit it off then turned it off for a little while.

You have one of two problems: Low on freon or it's dirty.

Clean it first: (I'm assuming it's a window air unit) Get the unit outside.

1. Get as much of the casing off as you can get off to be able to get to all of the coils.

2. Soak them all down with Mean Green. Let it soak in for a few minutes.

3. Spray it all out with hot water until the water runs clean.

4. If you still see some dirt in there repeat steps 1 - 3.

5. Put the unit back together and enjoy the cool.

If this doesn't work, it has to be a freon leak or low freon.

Note: To get hot water out to the A/C, hook it to a laundry sink or the nozzle at the bottom of your water heater.

It blows out water because it isn't dry. Put a ice cube on a table let it melt and dry up, see how long that takes :)

Is the water really hurting anything? I don't think you need to fix anything. If you want it to defrost faster turn on the "fan only" it will blow out water but it will defrost much faster.

It's freezing over because the air can't cool the coils. So your filter needs changed or the coils need cleaned.

The simple answer.

Pull the filter. If it is dirty get a new one or clean it.

On the thermostat, turn move the system switch to OFF and the fan switch to ON. Let run a couple hours to thaw.

After thawed, turn fan switch to AUTO. Replace the filter. If you don't have a new one, it is OK to run it for a day while you get a new one.

Turn the system switch back to COOL and see how it does. If it still doesn't work, then the coils are dirty or you are low on refrigerant.

If you can -- take it outside and use the garden hose to wash it out good --- filter too

Then put it back and run it ---

If it still freezes over -- then it may be low on freon R-22 --

The fan motor may be turning too slow to move the air across the coil. There may be 2 oiler holes on the motor  to oil the bearings --- this could help.

Water may be blowing out the front due to some blockage -- not allowing the water to drain to the back ----- could also need to be tilted back some to allow the water to run downhill to the back.
