How to fix a leaky tub faucet?

my tub faucet constantly drips and i am losing water all the time ...need some advice other than calling a costly plumber...thanks

  1. is it single or dual handle  either way a new cartridge or cartridges (for dual) usually stops the problem   turn off water to house   pop off cover on handle/handles remove s***w pull off handle and decorative collar (either unscrews or pulls off)  remove nut holding cartridge or may be a small clip to pull up  pull out cartridge  take to home center store and get replacement


  2. Geo is correct but may I add that not all faucets have cartridges. It also goes by if it is a kitchen faucet a lav faucet tub faucet etc. Some have a washer and seat. Some of the Delta brands have a ball and a set of cups (washers) and springs. Your best bet is to look at faucet and see if you can identify it then go to that manufactures web site and they have illustrated parts breakdowns. And remember before you pull any restraining clips or remove any locking nuts shut off the water to the faucet. Good Luck. Master Plumber
