How to fix a tv that has sound but no picture just a straight line?

You have lost vertical deflection.

Possible causes are----

Vertical amp chip needs re soldering.--- very common !

Vertical amp chip has failed and needs replacing !

Failure of electrolytic capacitors in vert circuit

Failure of resisters that supply volts to the vertical circuit

Failure of deflection yoke ( not very common )

AHA - i've seen that before.

some TVs have a couple of narrow k***s somewhere on the back. One of those expands and contracts the picture.

So, use a friend ( to sit in front of the TV) or put a mirror in front of the TV.

Turn each k**b slowly ( one at a time) and i think you will find that turning one of them allows you to adjust and fix the picture.
