My husband needs to install a new timing chain and pulley on a 99 chevy tracker. Does anyone know the easiest way to do this?

  1. There is no shortcut here.

If your husband has a better-than-average mechanical ability, then buy a QUALITY repair manual for the engine, and follow the procedure.

If he is merely a DIYer (NOT intended as an insult) then it will be better, and in all likelihood less expensive to have it done by a professional.

  2. #1 Buy a manual on the vehicle, haynes or chiltons. It will help a TON!!

drain oil and coolant from engine and radiator.

Not necessarily the easiest thing to do. He'll have to remove the water pump, crank pulley, harmonic balancer and timing cover to get to the chain. After the timing cover is off he'll remove the crank gears and cam gears with the timing chain. Put a new chain on. reverse procedure. This is a very vague explanation but definitely buy the manual from an auto parts store to get all of the info on the procedure. It will get complicated when it comes to doing the engine timing too. good luck!
