Question:

How to frame an old newspaper?

I have a reprint of an old issue of the New York Herald. Specifically it is one dealing with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Being a copy, I want to frame it. (had it been an original, you'd be reading about me in the news).

The problem is the paper itself is...old. it is at the most 120 and at the least 90 years of age. bought it at an estate sale cheap (another reason why I know its a reprint).

need some tips on how to frame it. one main worry is if it will remain still under the frame...

I have the perfect sized frame for it. but I am wondering if I need to do anything special to keep it steady under the glass.

  1. Here is an informative site on newspaper preservation:

  2. there is a special type of mounting tape to use in order to keep the print stationary in the frame.  Two other things to keep in mind are: acid free paper to keep the print paper from browning, and a protective type of glass to minimize sun damage.  If the piece is as old as you say it is, you may want to have it mounted professionally.

  3. Assuming as you say it is a repro copy, at 120 years old it would have been copied in 1888. Even if printed as a repro in 1918, at 90 years old, and if it is actually printed on NEWS PRINT, I have to wonder how you have it stored currently.

At the very least you might consider authenticating its age, even as a copy, and having it professionally framed.

The Matting and back up should be acid free, the copy should NOT come in contact with the glass you should assume is part of the process, and should be kept out of any direct light source, as well as heat or humidity source.
