  1. At your age, the time is very impressive. It would be good to join the track team and listen to your coach and be patient. At your age, physical development is more important than training - so you will develop your potential and when you are 17, you would be able to run amazing times.

  2. I've been there before... The golden rule is to teach yourslef to run faster, longer. f**t-lacks is just the right thing. Try sprinting to the first lamp post and jogging to the next then sprinting again. Also do tempo runs in which you run for say 3km at a very consistent pace that is faster than you would usually run.

  3. There is also a strategy to this event.

Try this on your next race:

First lap:  Push yourself a bit more than you think you should. Set a fast pace for the other runners.

Second lap: Cool it just a little bit and coast. Keep the fast pace up but save your strength for later.

Third lap: Really turn it up on this one. Don't worry about saving strength any more. Your adrenaline will carry you home.

Fourth lap: Keep up your fast pace for half a lap and then truly fire up the jets for the last 200 meters. Sprint as fast as you can go all the way through the tape.

The third lap is the key to this event. If you're in good shape, which it sounds like you are, you are not going to "die" on the fourth lap, so don't be like some runners and conserve all your energy for the final lap. When you cross the finish line you should be completely spent and ready to rest. If you feel like you could jog another lap, you should have used that leftover energy to run a faster race.

Remember also, that in a middle distance event like the mile (1500, sorry I'm old...) you not only want to do your personal best time, you also want to defeat your opponents. By setting a fast pace and turning up the heat on the third lap, you will damage the confidence of some of the weaker runners and give yourself the psychological edge.

  4. all you really can do is keep doing what you have been. it's a great way to gain speed. also, time yourself on 1500 and remember it. go to the gym and do sprint drills. next week, time yourself again in 1500 and see how much you've improved
