Hi so I've been laid off on the 20th of Feb. Now its March 16. I had insurance with the company before. From my understanding, I am able to get Cobra right? I worked for a company and they didn't have an HR department. So I never got the details for my insurance coverage. How do I get cobra? Will they send me something?

  1. Under federal law if your employer has more than 20 employees, they are required to offer COBRA. Your employer has 30 days to notify the insurance that you have terminated. Then the insurance has 14 days to send you the COBRA info. From the date of the notification, you have 60 days to elect or waive the coverage. Premium payment must be recieved within 45 days of electing the coverage.

At this point, the insurance should have recieved notification of your termination, so give them a call and see where they are in the timeline.

  2. whoever at that company dealt with paying the health insurance bills should be able to at least give you a contact at the insurance company - you only have 60 days after termination to sign up or you lose the ability to get the insurance and you have to pay the full premium back probably Mar 1 if they carried your insurance thru the end of Feb
