How to get a British/UK Passport?

Question

I want to know if I qualify for British Citizenship.

My mother was born and raised in Scotland and came to America in 1964, a few years later she married my father (American Born) and I was born a few years later,in America, as well as my siblings.

I actually went to the British Embassy in NYC years ago and asked if I was eligible but was told, (by a busy uninterested receptionist through a partition, so I don't know if it's true) that I didn't qualify since it would have to be that my father is the British citizen and not the mother in order to qualify if I was born before 1980 outside of the UK. I was born before 1980. Hope that's not true.

the information is wrong!!! it been changes to that stupid law, you can be register to be British...good luck:)
