  1. State and federal permits are required if migratory birds are involved.  I've attached two documents that are used in my state.  The application for the permit explains the minimum requirements needed to obtain the permit.  Your state probably has a similar process.  Just check with your state's wildlife agency.

In short, in Florida you must have a 1000 hours of documented experience working under a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or be able to pass a required test.  You must have sufficient facilities and enclosures to accommodate the numbers and types of animals you will be rehabilitating.  You must identify a veterinarian who will be working with you during the rehabilitation.  Your state's requirements may be different, but I'd expect something similar.

Well, you need to find a licensed rehabilitator and get busy!  Remember to find all the applicable state and federal rules and abide by them.  Good luck!

  2. First start of getting some experience working with animals. If you are old enough, volunteer at a wildlife rehab. Talk to your career counselor at school for advise. Mine gave me advice on places to volunteer, colleges, and possible jobs.

What are some other ways to gain animal experience?

Some places to look for volunteer jobs or internships might be:

    • Veterinary offices

    • Animal training classes (does your dog need obedience training?)

    • Local Humane Society

    • Local Park Service

    • Wildlife rehabilitation centers (like for wolves, bears, big cats, birds of prey, and even bats)

    • Animal shelters

    • Farms (for domestic animals, or even ostrich, llama, or butterfly farms)

    • Pet breeders (those that breed specific kinds of dogs, cats, or horses)

    • Horse stables and boarding facilities

    • 4-H Clubs

Talk to people you work at a rehab and see what it took them to get a job there. Also see what Wildlife Rehabs recommend for education.

Some degrees you might want to look into are:

Zoology- or sub field: Mammalogy, Ornithology,Avian Sciences, Avian Biology, etc.

    Zoo Science/Technology

    Animal/Exotic/Wildlife Management and/or Training

    Animal Science

Wildlife/Exotic/Zoo (biology, care, ecology, conservation, education, etc)

    Ethology/Animal Behavior

    Wildlife/Exotic/Zoo Veterinarian

And take a look at at the two Y!A below. The links should give you good info on becoming a wildlife rehabilitator, permits, rehabs locations, possible colleges, etc.

I hope the info helps. Good Luck.
