I'm a first time home owner and I hired some guys to add a bathroom in the lower level of my house but a few days into construction I was asked to stop construction until I obtained a building permit. So what are some steps I need to take to get this permit? Will someone need to come and see the part's that are already up? or will I have to take it all down and start again with a permit?

  1. In most cities, you can log into the Township building and planning department website and download any forms that you need to start the permitting process.  Since this is only a bathroom, it is common that it can be handled "over the counter" with permit fees that will be around a little over $100.  You may get by with minimal drawings as well, something that you may be able to draw up on graph paper (drawing have to be in scale).  After you get your permit, then you can start your project again.  You will only need to tear down any new construction if you violate construction code, setback, height or property line violations.  If your home is in Los Angeles County, you may be in for a little more work to get the permit.
