My friend and I have always talked about owning a company, and for his 18th I'd like to get him a certifiicate of ownership, but would I have to register it as a real company and have shares ect, its confusing what I have found.

Any ideas how I could do this and where?

  1. ahhh right - to set up a company limited by shares you'll have to register a company at companies house... now whilst this is quite easy and relatively cheap if you know exactly what you're doing it does require solicitors, documents and other items to be correctly drawn up... this will probably set you back anything from 150 to 500 quid...

buuuuuuuut... unfortunatly he or you will then be liable for annual returns, and sets of accounts to be drawn up every year - this needs to be done correctly and if not can result in a criminal offence.

I think what would be much better - and more affordable would be to buy your mate a website domain, or have him some cards and letter heads printed up... both of which can be done for 20/30 quid... and of course dont have the associated long term implications.

  2. Are you talking about setting up a company that doesn't do anything just so you would own it?  That's probably more trouble than it's worth - you have to file state papers, tax returns, possibly hold an "annual meeting" each year - all to say you "own" a company that doesn't exist?

I would buy him some shares of stock in a public company - at least they will most likely be worth something down the road and not cost money each year.
