How to get a replacement title when out of state?

Here's my dilemma, I'll be traveling through from Louisiana with a truck and trailer, and need to pick up a car in Illinois that my boss just got purchased. But the seller is from Nevada, and didn't bring his title along, nor does he have anyone who can access it to send it to him or to me and he won't be home before I pick up the car (which is with him in Illinois right now) I'm a Canadian, and this car needs to be exported, which requires the title before it can cross the line, and my trip isn't changeable time wise. Can Illinois issue the owner a replacement title even though it's titled in Nevada, and how would he go about doing it. I will have the car and the seller paid properly, just no title for clearing customs with. Or are there any other suggestions. Thanks!

  1. NOPE- no chance

    Must get Nevada title

  2. If it is in running condition (not on a trailer) I think it would be less likely considered to be merchandise. Why not drive it across the border then when in Canada reload it onto the trailer and be on your way, handling the title trtansfers be remote/mail upon your arrival at your destination.

Thousands of tourists drive their cars across the border daily without issue. Hire an American citizen to say he's a tourist drive it across the border then give him a ride back.

If you get caught loading it back on the trailer once inside Canada good luck !

I believe that once a car is registered in one state then that state can reissue a title upon proof of ownership---ie a valid title from another state.  The process requires some time to complete.

There is maybe a legal problem about selling the car  in Illinois for a disposition in Canada--ie not an illinois resident---at the very least Illinois will want to collect some tax for the transaction !

Unless you drive it across the border I think you have lost the opportunity for the (free) ride to Canada on your trailer---such shipping ought to be figured into the purchase price.

What do you suppose the chances are that its on some hot sheet ??  Any police officer can check it for you but then if it is you have to play 20 questions with them about how it came to be in your possession !

  3. The legal owner  or whoever has power of attorney of the vehicle needs to contact whatever state that car is registered in and gget a replacement title.
