  1. Use a cigarette lighter and very quickly pass the flame close to the sticker to melt the adhesive backing on the sticker.  Don't be too slow, or you'll scorch the cover.

Carefully, use a fingernail to scrape up the edge of the sticker.  When the adhesive backing is sufficiently loosened, you'll be able to peel off the sticker with no damage to the notebook cover.  You may have to pass the lighter flame across the sticker several times to get the adhesive loose enough to peel the entire sticker off.

Depending on the adhesive used, you may have a clean surface left when the sticker is removed.  If adhesive residue remains, use a very tiny drop of oil (mineral oil, baby oil, etc.) on a paper towel, and rub it on the glue residue, and it'll take it right up.  Again, be careful.  Because, if the notebook cover is very porous, oil could leave a stain.

  2. This is the easiest least expensive way.  Use a tiny bit of mayo, butter, or oil.  I work in a university office and am also a student and I recycle used vinyl binders this way.  You get as much of the sticker off as you can by tearing it off and then rub a little mayo (or other oil) on the cover with your finger and it will take care of the residue.  Then just wipe clean.
