I am moving 4 hours away in September. I currently have a summer job right now (making about $1000 a month). When i move how can i get an apartment before I get a job? I really am not going to live in a truck until i can get a job. I didnt know if theres anyway to get a job a head of time or not? Im going to go look for apartments about 1 month before I am moving. Any info would be helpful.

  1. It would be helpful if you could document savings.

  2. The sooner you look (whereever your moving) the better. And save as much money as possible so that when you do get a place you'll have a time to look for a job. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to job hunt while  your apartment searching. If you can get both before you move, then it's a success.

  3. Use the internet to find apartments that are in that area and call and speak with the landlords. Explain your situation to them.  Find more than one and make a day out of it going to the differend place and looking at all of them until you find one you like.  That way you would only have to make less trips while looking for apartments.  Once you find one you like call the landlord and tell him you want to buy and maybe he could just send you the papers to sign instead of driving there again. And then when it's time for you to move you will be all set.

  4. Why would you have to get a job first?  I have always just gone in, filled out the application paperwork and payed first, last, and the second month (because I know money will be tight when I am getting the job).  You can get the paperwork started and tell them the expected date of arrival all over email or fax.  Then when you arrive you sign the rental agreement and they hand over the keys the day you arrive.  Don't wait till 1 month before you move, start looking now and get on the lists.  Then you will be able to choose the best option before it becomes an issue.

I rented an apartment one summer near my moms house completely over email and fax from Japan.  (the apartment was in Arizona).  The apartment wasn't ready the day I arrived, but it was ready the next day so it wasn't a big deal.

And start looking for the job (send out your apps) now too.  That way you can start interviewing as soon as you arrive.  If they want an interview sooner, ask for a phone interview because you are currently at a different location.

    No problem.

    good luck.
