Standard DVD players read the .Vob format, the files you have now are in AVI format..

If the .avi file is some flavour of MPEG-4, such as DivX, you may be able to just copy it to a CD and play it - more and more DVD players support MPEG-4.  If that's not an option, try DVD Flick - it works, it's legal and it's free.
