Question:

How to get an engineering internship even with bad grades and incomplete degree.

My boyfriend and I both went to a prestigious university for our under-graduate degrees. I graduated top of my class and am working full time. Unfortunately, he went through some rough times and made some poor decisions. He earned pretty low grades and never finished school (he is only two classes away!!) He really wants to get his life back together and plans to finish his degree this coming spring. For the fall, we hope to find him an internship, which seems to be required in his field in order to secure a good job (he is in Mechanical Engineering). How can we find him an internship even though he has a low gpa and hasn't finished his degree? I know that if we could speak to someone personally and explain his situation we could probably stand a chance, but all of the engineering companies seem to use automated online applications and he gets weeded out right away and isn't considered. Please help!! (We are looking for internships in/around Boston).

  1. All he can do to try for internships is to keep sending his resume out to companies and attending career fairs. Have him check with the school and see if they can find him an internship, I am an electrical engineering student at the University of Akron, my school got me my internship and I know a lot of schools out there can.

  2. There is nothing that you can do.  Explaining the situation assuming he gets an interview will only make things worse.  He absolutly must go back and finish school.  There is no other way to acheive what he wants to acheive without the degree.  Grades don't matter.
