How to get an opinion of the specialist for my antique jewelly(in London)??

Question

Bought an antique jewelly few years ago in London. Cost me 750 pounds, but bought it as a commemorative gift for my mother. Been to Chrisitie's to seek the opinion, and told it's value is no more than 150pounds. Trust Christies,but still like to seek the second opinion, as I don't want to think the antique shop owner( who was my aquaintance) charged me 5 times more.

You need to understand that antique values are not static.

There are times when something is in fashion and times when it is not and this goes for furniture as well as jewellery. For example when The Duchess of Windsor Wallace Simpsons jewellery from the twenties and thirties was sold in the 1980's suddenly you buy copies everywhere.

It might be that the piece you have has gone out of favour and will not fetch much now.

Sotheby's, Phillip's and Bonham's would probably give opinions but remember they are used to dealing with really high quality items and therefore you may be better off going to one of the smaller London auction houses.

You may do better selling privately to a dealer and avoiding commission if you want to sell it.

If you want an insurance valuation be sure that is what you get..that is not the same as an auction estimate.
