Question:

How to get .avi files to work in a DVD player?

I have some .avi files I'd like to burn onto some DVD+R discs to play in my DVD player. Can I just burn them to the discs and pop it in the DVD player or do I need to convert the files? What EXACTLY do I need to do?

If it makes any difference I'm working on a MacBook.

  2. I have a DVD player and it could play AVI files (DivX format)

You have to check the box if your player is compatible.

  3. ◆※※※※※※◆

You can’t directly burn them to dvds.

You have to use a DVD creation software.

I know there is an appl named Wondershare DVD Creator for Mac that can burn avi and other video formats to dvd.

  4. Download SUPER it's a program that converts files into diffferent format files first of all Go here http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

keep going down and find the download link when you download it obviously install it then open it.

It may look real confusing at first but it's really quite easy

On the top when you see [1. Select the Output Container select

mpg (Mpeg 1) then press    ctrl + T    and select where u want to save the converted file(s) then press     ctrl + A    and select what files u want to convert when you've done that press Encode (Active Files) and it will convert the file to the place u selected.

    Viola Converted Files

Now make a dvd and they should work on your DVD player

P.S: if u somehow can't download it from the SUPER website try  http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/SU...

  5. I always use Aimersoft DVD Creator, it can easily convert all popular video formats (AVI, MP4, MPG, MPEG, 3GP, WMV, ASF, RM, RMVB, DAT, MOV, FLV, etc) to DVD and burn DVD movie played on portable and home DVD players, that's very good, you can check it out here for free:

    http://www.aimersoft.com/dvd-creator.htm...

Of course, http://answers.yahoo.com can give you more options

  6. In general they don't.

If the AVI was created with the Divx codec, or a compatible one, and the DVD player supports Divx, then it might play. There are other issues too that can prevent it from playing even though the compression codec is compatible. It may take a little trial and error. But you first have to be sure the player supports your codec. Then there's audio, Mpeg1 or 2 layer 2 will most always work. AC3 most always works, MP3 sometimes works. If it supports Divx it will likely also support MP3.

Otherwise you will have to convert the content into DVD-Video.

  7. You will need a converter to convert the avi files to DVD format (vob, ifo, bup) and then burn these files onto a DVD disc.

[NOTE: If your DVD player is DivX compatible, then you can just put the single file on the DVD disc using a burning software like Nero http://www.nero.com/ . The disc should play directly on your player. No need for conversion. To know if the player is DivX compatible, check for a "DivX" logo on the front panel of the player]

You may find other converters (Xilisoft, Cucusoft, ConvertX) if you do a google search for 'avi to dvd', but, most of them will be shareware or trial which will convert only a certain percentage of the file or have a time limit or have a watermark on the output file.

I've illustrated the actual conversion process using DVD Flick which I find the simplest to use here-
