  1. Place the ball in the back of your stance and hit down on the back of the ball.  It also helps to use a high spin ball.

  2. All of the above answers sound good, but the most important aid to backspin is the ball.  You must use a soft ball, such as a Titleist pro vi.  Also its important to keep your clubs clean and dry, with no dirt in the grooves.  New irons help too, as the edges of old grooves will get worn.

The key to developing maximum backspin is how you apply a very precise strike on the golf ball. The trick is to make sure that you strike the ball before you hit anything else. A lot of amateur golfers try to scoop the golf ball upwards off the fairway not knowing that the correct way is actually to strike down and through the golf ball.

To encourage a clean strike of the ball, focusing on the very top instead of the back of the golf ball can help. Play the shot with a slightly open stance to encourage more of an out to in type of swing.

Try to take a divot, remembering that you should be hitting down and through the ball, contacting the ball first. A note of caution here, hitting down too steep can cause you to chop into the ground before or after hitting the ball.

To engage maximum backspin you should ideally have a slightly open stance, with your weight more on your left side.

During the club take away it should be initiated by the arms with an early wrist break so as to enable a sharp descending strike onto the golf ball. You should only use a half or three quarter swing for this shot.

It is also essential that your ball and club-face are kept clean to apply backspin. Make sure when possible that you clean your ball and keep your grooves and club-face clean. Get into the habit of regularly using a groove cleaner and always clean the club-face before putting it back into your bag.

Your priority with this type of shot is not to be trying for distance; it is to strike the ball as clean as possible. Keep your swing shorter and more compact will help you make a more precise strike of the ball. With your weight more to your left side this will help you to naturally hit the ball with a descending blow.

  4. The #1 most important thing is to hit it solid.

A - You must hit it on somewhat of a descending blow

B - The clubface should be slightly open

I've got a trick that I use on some shorter shots that make it spin like crazy - I just hope I can describe it well...

    Crazy Spin Directions

    - Open stance a little, Open clubface a little

    - On backswing - have very little wrist break

    - On downswing, come down on a descending blow (but not too much, just focus on hitting it solid)

    - AT CONTACT - this is where it gets tricky

** After solid contact - you have to finish your swing very "high"   * Instead of rolling your hands OVER - roll them upward.  Imagine pointing your right fingernails at your face, and imagine pointing the back of your left hand at your face.

    - At the end of your swing, your hands should be very high, and about 8 inches from your head (where the normal swing would be much different)

You'll probably need to reread that, if it makes sense, but I'm serious --- It'll spin the heck out of it if you practice it.

    Good Luck!

  5. Crisp descending blow, hit ball first, then take  your divot.

  6. You want to make your divot in front of the ball.

  7. My Backsoin Checklist

    1.accelerate through ball

    2. steep attack angle

    3. descending blow

    4. divot after ball

    hope this helps

  8. A high handicapper asked that very question of Sam Snead once. He asked that golfer "how far do you hit your 7 iron?" the guy said "about 130 yds"  Sam asked " why do you want it to back up?"

  9. Hit the ball first on a descending swing, before you hit the ground.

  10. Just improve your strike, then the spin will come naturally with more lofter clubs. You Will find that you will get more spin with a club such as a 7 iron, rather than your wedges because of more acceleration through the ball.

  11. If your initial contact is low on the face of the club, and you have a descending blow, the ball will ride up the face of the club creating back spin.

The grooves of the clubs also plays a part.  If you have worn grooves or sand/dirt/grass in your grooves, it will be more difficult to spin the ball.

  12. you can get spin on your golf ball by coming down with a descending blow on your ball. almost as if ur pinching it in between the ground and the club. but make sure ur grooves of your club are clean to get max spin come down with your knuckles  facing to the ground to put more backspin.

  13. Short club works best. Strike down, almost "chopping" the back of the ball. It's tough to get at first, practice with soft swing, short distance. You HAVE to land it on a green to get the spin to work. Short grass grabs it too well to get much spin. I practiced with a lob wedge from about 40 yds. Took about 3 buckets of balls and 2 days. Kept backing up till a 6 iron will spin.

    PRACTICE

  14. To get a nice backspin you need to:-

    a) hit the ball using a more lofty iron, say using 7, 8, 9, PW and the SW (especially the 60 deg SW);

    b) hit the ball on a steeper downward or descending blow (as opposed to a sweeping lateral blow), finishing with your divot after the ball, not before the ball;

Note: i) The ball will still have a positive momentum going forward, but with a characteristic backspin upon landing on the green; ii) there is still the need to follow through your golf swing untl you finish at the top.
