Question:

How to get budgie to eat his greens?

Hello. Anyone know how to get a budgie to eat vegetables and fruit? I know they are important for him. I bought a bag of mixed food but he sits in it (like its a bath) and throws out everything except the actual seeds(which are fattening). So I placed a little grated carrot and celery into a small bowl on the cage floor but he just ignored it. I don't even know if he can see it!

So if anyone out there has discovered a way around this I (and budgie) would be most grateful for your advice :-)

  1. Budgies (budgerigars or parakeets) often suffer from obesity, fatter liver disease, goiter and hypothyroidism due to poor diets. Encourage your budgie to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables along with a formulated diet. Budgies often resist converting to a pelleted diet. Introduce a more healthful menu by clipping pellets and biscuits intended for larger birds to cage bars. Watch your little guy gnaw on them!

  2. Budgies are like children. Very fussy & very reluctant to try out new food! My suggestion is that you try out first with spinach which at least in the case of my budgie, worked. The spinach should be moist ( freshly washed with water) & kept hanging from branches or even kept in a bowl or on a plate inside the cage. Reduce the seed component of the diet proportionately. Your budgie may initially ignore the spinach, but soon he would love it. All the best to you & your budgie.

  3. take him out of the cage with one lettus leaf in front of his beak. just sit there with him like that. soon he'll guive it a nibble, then love it! it worked with my first bird. also, if you want him to get to try something new, let him see you nibble on it first. it gets them interested. what ever im eating my little budgie quin makes me share, or he'll come over and try to pry it out of my mouth :P
