How to get cheapest from Vienna to Florence?

By train would be my guess.

If you leave today you can already get a ticket for 95 euro by train. The cheapest airline ticket I found was with Swiss and came down to around 250 euro, based on a roundtrip (totals at about 500 euro then). It's very dependent on when you're planning to travel of course.

The train will take the better part of a day to get there though...

I live about 2 hours from Florence and always take the train to go to Vienna and return. With the train, you start and end in the city and don't have to deal with getting through security, picking up baggage, or arranging transportation between the airport and the city.

There are direct night trains from Vienna to Florence. The standard fare is 90 euro for a seat, 110 euro for a berth in a 6 bed cuchette, or 120 euro for a berth in a 4 bed cuchette.

However, there's also a discounted fare offered for 29 euro, 49 euro, or 59 euro for the three seating options listed above. See the "Smart" fare at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. The discount fares sell out first, but I've had pretty good luck getting them.

There are also more expensive single and double bed compartments available.

However, there are budget flights between Vienna and Pisa on SkyEurope. http://www.skyeurope.com/en/ They only fly on Thursday and Sunday though. Fares are 109 to 169 euro with the exception of the 21st of Sept when there is a 49 euro fare available. Trains from Pisa airport to Florence are frequent and cheap (5.60 euro), but are an additional 64 to 90 minutes to the travel time. There are other options using Air Berlin, or Air One, but they require a connection in Rome.

Try EasyJet, RyanAir, and WizzAir for cheap flights. I had to get from Amsterdam to London, and I saved about 100 Euros by flying. The trains are often more expensive, IF you can find a good deal on a flight.
