Question:

How to get de-greaser smell out of air conditioning unit?

We cleaned our air-conditioner unit with spray-de-greaser meant for cleaning engines, etc. hoping it would help remove gunk from the inside. It worked, but now there is a bad chemical smell coming thru the ductwork from it and it's terrible, gave us a headache and so we turned it off and repeated the rinsing with the waterhose. That didn't help. What else can we do?! Whew it's hot, but we can't cool off using fumey air! Help!

  1. Wherever you sprayed the de-greaser, give it a good clean with a wet cloth.

  2. There is a coil cleaner for that purpose and it does not smell... It does very well too..get it home depot or Lowe's...

As for removing the smell....just keep flushing the coils and make sure the drain pan in the air handler is flushed also... You may even want to attach a shop vacuum to the outside overflow drain and suck it out of the line... I still believe you'll have this odor for sometime... Try using Fabreeze, lots of it also... Good Luck

  3. Do you have a pump up sprayer? Mix up a little dish washing soap and maybe a little bleach and spray it again. Then rinse it again be sure you spray down the pan at the bottom too. You may even use a little pine cleaner and water you have to get rid of the de- greaser.

  4. I'm afraid you're screwed and It will take forever for the smell to go away on it's own. You might try spraying some room deodorizer / air freshener of a couple different types in the AC unit and into the fresh air intake. Try that process over and over however too much may also give you bad results. Like I said you're screwed!

  5. this might sound strange but get a glass of water and leave it in the room your working in. the water takes in the smell. or you could use an orange. which is the best de-greaser.

  6. go to this link I had the same problem

    http://www.ptbent.com/diffusers.html

  7. Wasnt a very wise move, well u gota remove the filter thing from inside the airconditioner and replace it. If that doesnt work i reckon u gota replace it or send it to a repairs, though i doubt that a repairs visit would do good.

    Good luck
