How to get forward motion from a lawnmower engine strait to a trans-axle? by using pulleys and belts.?

Im making a gocart out of a rideon mower and replacing the engine with another one we stripped it from the sheet metal the seat panels and engine we removed the transaxel to take of the the old rusted thing we called a pulley but I need to know where the govorner is in the craftsman eager-1. but I know its only a 5 hp but we have the ride on to the frame. so realy im making a gocart.

  1. yep.  get 'em at the hardware store.

    it might be good if you explained what size vehicle you're working on.

    if you mount the belt fairly loose, and have an extra pulley or something to tighten it, you'll be able to take pressure off the 3rd pulley to let the belt slip, so you can stop with out shutting off the engine.  the extra is generally called an idler pulley, and it doesn't have to have a V-shape, it can just be flat.  you don't want to run the engine fast while slipping the belt because it'll burn the belt.  but sometimes it's nice to be able to stop and not turn the engine off.


  2. Manual or Auto?

    Have to have a clutch of some kind,  centrifugal?

    A method to apply the power to the transmission without stalling the engine.

    Gilmer belts (toothed) and pulleys are best and a tensioner would help take the slack out. (much like a timing belt on the engine) Good luck.
