You own the copyright for the software you write, and can set the license terms for how it is distributed.

There are several licenses to choose from. Each imposes different things. The GPL is all about preserving the source code for future published modifications, and there are other licenses that are less restrictive.

It's up to you. If you really trust an open source developer's judgement and have similar goals you may want to use the license they do.
