I volunteer for non profit organization that is facing a crisis. We unload furntiure and heavy items from people that donate them in order to sale them to help the community in which I live. We made 600k last year and gave back to our our community. Problem: We have to find alternatives to unload and move furniture without having 3 men to help. Average age of volunteer 60. I am the youngest at 47. Need options desperately. Besides hiring 2 men, What are our options? please any suggestions?

  1. Have you tried recruiting younger volunteers? Have you targeted university fraternities, communities of faith (churches, temples and mosques), sports fans associations, etc.? Have you tried high schools? Have you posted your volunteering opportunities to http://www.volunteermatch.org or http://www.idealist.org or with your city's volunteer center? Have you written a public service announcement and faxed it to all of the radio stations that play music targeted at younger people and young adults?

If you read through YahooAnswers, you will see again and again requests from young people looking for simple assignments they can do without much training or any education needed -- things they can do with their friends in particular.

  2. You could buy forklifts or recruit male teenagers and offer them volunteer hours.

I recommend the latter option. Be sure to provide free food.

  3. well instead of hiring them try finding some to volunteer! if not I would suggest getting a wheel barrow, trolley, basically anything to make your hob easier, if that doesnt work then try using the muscle you have at your disposal, instead of 2-3 people moving a peice of furniture try gettiing all the volunteers to move it, it puts less strain on one person and can be great teamwork building excercise!
