  1. try out the skin flute

  2. HI Christie.   Sounds like you are willing and able to work really hard for what you want.   That is taking the first, most important step.  :)).   I am an experienced flute teacher and work with students who are determined to play in state competitions and audition for college scholarships... so I really do have to challenge my students to their limits.   The following is a list of things you should be doing every day to take your playing to the next level.

    1.  Dedicate a fair amount of practice time every day - between 1 and 2 hours.

    2.  Tone Study - from the Trevor Wye Volume 1 book/ using tuner.

    3.  Scales from Pares,  Taffanel,  Wye,

    4.  Skills, including double tonguing, vibrato, nuances,  chromatic sequences.

    5.  Etudes from Anderson, Berbiguier,  Karg-Elert

    6.  Be trying to find a nice Class I solo to be working on little by little.

    7.  Sight read everything and anything you can find.

    8.  Play nothing without a metronome.

That should keep you busy.  But you really need a good teacher to chart your progress.   You probably don't live in the Houston area... but if you do... email me.

Hope my suggestion will be helpful.   Thanks for reading.

  3. There is no website or book that will help you one FRACTION as much as a good teacher.  They can assess where you are, and assign what you need.  Yes, I *am* one!

  4. Make sure you're playing a flute that's solid silver and has a gold lip plate.

half of a good sound is the instrument itself

  5. scales, apersios, chorales. mostly pratice scales, and play and play and play. Can you play flute open holed? that'll be a good challenge, it makes higher notes come out easier and a better sound

    good luck

  6. CONGRATS on being 1st chair! I've been playing flute since I was young and I love it. I bought Rubank Methods for Flute and they have great exercises and pieces in it. I recommend you visit your local music shop and ask for these. They're very helpful. And practice practice practice. When you begin a new piece and you struggle with it, break it down into smaller pieces to make it easier for you. That's what helped me.
