How to get internet back on computer RE-intalled with Windows XP?

I had a virus on my computer. In the process of getting rid of it, I accidentally deleted important files (I'm not sure whether to call them 'files' or not) but anyway, I restarted my computer and there was a black screen with white letters telling me that Windows was missing, therefore the computer could not start up, or give me anything other then a blank screen. So I reinstalled Windows XP onto my computer using the reinstallation CD that came when I bought the computer, and Windows works fine. The only problem now is that I cannot connect to the internet. I've tried everything, and I'm quite savvy with computers if I may say so myself, but nothing seems to work. Why is my computer not recognizing the modem cable when I try to set up a network connection? When I unplugg all the modem cables and plug the modem into my moms computer, it has no problem recognizing an internet connection! How can I get my computer to work the internet?!!!

  1. it sounds like you havent installed the drivers after reinstalling windows, you should have a drivers disc as well as the windows disc, if you dont have the driver disc use another pc and go to the manufacturers web site and download all the drivers for your model and burn them to cd or copy them to a flash drive and then install them into your pc

  2. Did you install the drivers for your modem?

  3. Install driver for ethernet port. Go to My Computer - Right click & choose Properties - Hardware Tab - Device Manager. That will tel you if anything is missing in drivers. Should be under networking

    Hope it helps

  4. If your Windows CD is a 'recovery CD', then it should have re-installed all of the necessary drivers for your brand name computer.  If you have an 'OEM' CD, then you have to manually download & install drivers for your computer.

I'll assume that you used a Recovery CD.

After you run the Network Setup Wizard, click the Start button and click on 'Run...'  Type in 'cmd' (without the quotes) and then type in 'ipconfig /renew'  Now try using your browser.  If it doesn't work, then go back to the console window and type 'ipconfig /release' and then type 'ipconfig /renew' again.

If your connection still doesn't work, then connect the modem to your mom's computer, access the console window again, and type 'ipconfig /release'.  Unplug the electrical cable for the modem for 10 seconds and then connect the modem to your computer again.  Try typing 'ipconfig /renew' again.

For some ISPs, when you connect up your modem to a computer for the first time, usually the modem & ISP will make a note of the MAC address built into the network card.  (MAC addresses are unique for every network device.)  If you just unconnect the modem and connect it to some other network card, the modem won't recognise the new network card's MAC address and won't allow a connection.

If you still can't connect, then try calling your ISP's customer service line.

  5. It sounds like you have DSL. You need to install your ISP's software on your computer. It is the only way to log onto there network and access the Internet.

If you don't have DSL, then you need a driver for you computer.

And, did I read correctly, you have a modem. Are you on dial up? If thats the case, then you don't need a separate modem, your computer would most likely have one built in. You only need to use one modem, so cut out the middle one (only if you use dial up).

    Good luck.
