How to get jobs in retail?

I am a student who wants a part time job in retail, like a clothes shop or a bookshop or a music shop, in a basic general capacity. what is the best way to get such a job?

Getting the jobs not the hard part, remaining sane while working there is. Retail can be a very stressful job at times. You have to deal with screaming kids, middle schooler’s who go and move everything around and try to annoy you, rude customers, you have to clean up other peoples messes, you have to fold shirts numerous times, you have to take back the items customers are to lazy to take back and just leave in front of the register, etc. I would say the best part of my shift/job is talking trash about the shoppers with my managers and co-workers. You really can't say anything to the costumers other then yes sir, no sir; would you like to speak with my manager? Best of luck!

Drop a copy of your CV in to as many shops in your local area as possible.

look in everyshop window that u might wanna work in. these jobs arent usually advertised in the paper or anything like that so just keep persevering.  if there are a few particualr shops, go in and get your name down. they might ring you when they have a job!

Put together a cv and take one to all the retail stores in your area. I started a xmas temp for Argos and have now been working thre nearly 2 years.

Go in and ask at suitable stores, drop them your CV - be pro active, they're not going to pull you in off the street! Your Uni or College should have a job finding service to help you, but be aware that lots of retailers don't want students (they have their reasons apparently) and you'll probably end up waiting tables or doing bar work.
