Question:

How to get landlord to let me have a dog

by  |  earlier

I live on the third floor of an apartment building. The landlord has redone all the other apartments except ours. We already have 2 cats, and asked him years ago if we could get a dog. He said yes, then a few weeks later changed his mind before we had a chance to get one.

Now, a few years later, we would like to ask him again. Any advice to get him to let us would be helpful. Thanks!

  1. Well... Any other dogs in the building? If so ask them how they were able to have one?. In my state if a Dr. says you need to have a "companion dog"  L/L must let you have one, offer to pay "Pet Deposit".I know someone who got an Insurance Bond to cover any damage done by their Rottweiler it also covered any liability that may fall on L/L. They named the L/L as the benificiary. Everyone was happy, 3 yrs later they moved, no claims ever made againist bond. Worked well for all ! Best of luck

  2. butter him up, be nice.

maybe be willing to pay a little more in rent

make life easier for him somehow.

but then again there could be rules about pets in rental properties that are beyond his control.

  3. with difficulty. I mean, if you ever move out, it will be harder for him/her to find another tenant if the place smells like dog! (hey, I'm a dog lover, but if i had a choice between an apartment that smells of someone else' dog and one that doesnt, i know which one i would choose!)

besides, a dog in an apartment is a bit sad for the dog... dogs aren't made for apartments. they like the sun and grass..

  4. Ask if you can get a small dog.  Offer to pay a pet deposit or monthly pet rent.  In the house my husband and I rent, we had to pay a deposit for our seven parrots and then my husband asked if we could get a small dog.  We were told yes, but would have to pay an additional pet deposit of $250.  We aren't getting a dog, but that's because I'm the one who would have to take care of it, and I don't want to do that when I already take care of the seven parrots.  Once we are able to buy a house, I'll get a dog.

But remember that you live in an apartment so you have shared walls and no private backyard.  You would have to take the dog for daily walks since an apartment is not suitable for most dogs.

  5. Don't click on the link from bamps...  That is a virus!!!

To answer your Q, ask if  you could give an additional security deposit.

  6. Ask him if you can get a small dog, good luck!

  7. maybe offer to pay a dog bond. It reassures your landlord just in case anything goes wrong. All the best to you.

  8. Tell him that I don't feel safe. If someone breaks into my appartment, you will be responsible mister.
