  1. Is it string algae?  http://www.ponddoc.com/WhatsUpDoc/WaterQ...

There are many ways to get string algae out of your pond, from easy to complicated.  Tryhttp://www.taoherbfarm.com/herbs/resourc...

I use AlgaeFix http://www.waterworksponds.ca/images/pro... occasionally in my pond.

I also use beneficial bacterial enzyme tablets.

A pond is a balanced ecosystem.  If the water has too many nutrients in it, algae can form.  Some fine mossy algae on the sides is fine, but string algae is nasty.

    A balanced pond should have:

    1.  At least 6 hours of sun daily.

    2.  Plants like water hydrangea and water lilies.

    3.  Fish.

    4.  An aerator (bubbler, sprayer, waterfall).

    5.  Some type of filter, either around the pump or in a separate biofilter.

A biofilter is simply a large plastic tub with filter medium (I use special rainbow sponges).  You occasionally lift out the filter medium and rinse it off.  My biofilter is at the top of my little waterfall.

All this sounds complicated and annoying, but most of these are one-time expenses.  It actually took about 2 years for my pond to become so balanced that I don't have to use bacteria or AlgaeFix anymore unless it's rained a lot or unless it's especially humid.

Whenever I get string algae in my pond, I rip it out and put it in my compost heap.

  2. All moss needs to grow is sunlight and water. As far as getting rid of it I have heard that grass carp will eat all sorts of vegetation. Try this link: http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/plants...
